Cigar Review: New World by AJ Fernandez

This 2014 winner of Cigar Journal's Cigar of the Year award is rolled in the AJ Fernandez factory located in Esteli, Nicaragua. This cigar is rolled with 100% Nicaraguan leafs from the areas of Esteli, Ometepe, Condega, and Jalapa.
Link to the Cigar:

The Anatomy of the cigar consists of
Filler: Nicaraguan blend of Ometepe, Condega, and Esteli
Binder: Nicaraguan Jalapa
Wrapper: Dark Nicaraguan

Vitola: This Box Pressed cigar is at a 55 ring gauge and measures 5.5" with the shape name Navegante and is considered a robusto in size.

Appearance: The New World has a beautiful dark brown oily wrapper with pure visible veins that do not protrude.

Construction: The cigar has a very slight spongy give in its pack with a perfect box press shape and tangible oils from the wrapper

Prelight: The aroma of the cigar is a slight hay and earth with a clean cold draw.

First Third: The first third is medium body with a draw you could not ask more out of. It is smooth with flavors of creme coffee, pepper, and a slight chocolaty note. The burn light is razor sharp.

Second Third: Almost half way through and the tastes are the same overall with an added pepper kick putting it at a now medium to full body.

Last Third: The final third is boosted in taste and body. Tastes include pepper, coffee, and a hint of earth.

Overall: All together this cigar has great tastes and is very consistent. Pepper, coffee, and hints of creme and earth are what to expect out of this box pressed cigar. An interesting side note: If you do need to relight this cigar the tastes do not give off the normal bitter or licorice tastes that most cigars give after relighting. Also, in my past experiences with this cigar a notable drawback was the amount of glue used to hold the band. Many times I have damaged the band almost entirely and wrappers have been torn. However, more recently I have discovered that they may have fixed this problem as the band easily comes off without much effort.

Score: 9.5/10
