Cigar Reviews: CAO Flathead Steel Horse

If CAO was not diverse enough within its wide variety of lines, they have created this beastly smoke, a slight variation of its cousins in the Flathead line. Designed with bikers in mind, CAO offers the Steel Horse in individual boxes for easy transport. Make sure you have a punch cutter handy because this cap is flatter than the roadkill you just struck on your twin turbo chopper.

The Anatomy of this cigar consists of
Filler: Dominican, Honduran, Nicaraguan
Binder: Brazilian Arapiraca
Wrapper: Connecticut Habano Grueso

Vitola: The "Apehanger" comes in at 5 and half inches with a 58 ring gauge.

Appearance: The Connecticut Habano Grueso wrapper blusters a rich, dark brown with a bit of oily sheen.

Construction: Little tooth on the wrapper equates to a smooth buttery, yet not oily, feel.

Prelight: The aroma off the cigar offers fresh hay and chocolate notes while the cold draw tastes of sweet tobacco and hay.

First Third: In the first section of the stick I experienced tastes of cocoa, creme, and earth with a fair amount of smoke rolling off the foot.

Second Third: Moving further along, the earthy notes dissipate and the cigar unveils sweet tobacco and almond. Meanwhile the cocoa undertones keep strong.

Final Third: The last third consisted of mainly sweet tobacco with the cocoa finally subsiding. Jointly, the very final puffs gave off lots of pepper and spice.

Overall: In conclusion, the Steel Horse Apehanger is a decent full bodied smoke. With flavors of cocoa and a sweet tobacco filling the majority of the cigar, there are subtle surprises and hints of unique flavors. A few touch ups were needed to keep the burn even and make sure you utilize your punch cutter before lighting up. If you are fan of fuller bodied sticks and CAO, I highly recommend you pick this bad boy up.

Rating: 7/10

Thank you so much to Blaine Rodenbaugh for giving me this cigar for review.
